AP: Culver says he'll offer voters clear choice

Posted on Friday, May 14 at 6:42am

Mike Glover of the AP wrote an article about Governor Culver's appearence on Iowa Press yesterday. In the article the Governor explains the choice we have in this election:

"I think by Nov. 2 voters will realize there's a clear choice about going forward and building on the progress we've made in the last four years or going back to the failed Republican policies of the past," said Culver. "We're hearing it in this primary. Trickle down economics, tax cuts for the wealthy corporations. Those policies have been tried and they've failed in the past."

Culver will formally open his bid for a second term with a five-day trip throughout the state beginning Monday at the Des Moines high school where he once worked as a teacher. He doesn't have opposition in the primary.

And there was some focus on how every Republican candidate wants to cut funding for pre-school:

I think voters are going to learn very clearly about the choice that we have," said Culver. "Do we want to continue to allow women to make their own health care decisions? Do we want to continue to do stem cell research? Do we want to continue to provide education opportunities for children to go to preschool?"

Culver emphasized the difference he has with Republicans over preschool programs, which have expanded dramatically in the past several years thanks to state funding. He said ensuring preschool to all families who want it has been one of his priorities, calling it essential to preparing children for school.

Culver noted that all three Republicans seeking the GOP nomination oppose universal preschool.

"These are all things that the opponents on the other side want to take away. They want to repeal that progress," said Culver. "This is really going to be a referendum on our state's future on Nov. 2."
