The Burlington Hawk Eye reported about First Lady Mari Culver's work to raise awareness about the Earn Income Tax Credit. It can help a lot of working families, especially during the national recession:

First Lady Mari Culver has noticed a disturbing trend among Iowans when tax season rolls around. Many of them are not taking advantage of a tax credit that could net them as much as $5,000. Culver has been touring the state to raise awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit and spoke to a group of about 20 senior citizens at the Newberry Senior Center Wednesday afternoon. Her tour also included stops in Wapello and Mount Pleasant.

"It (the earned income tax credit) was developed in 1975 as a way to give targeted tax relief to really low-wage earners, and it was designed to lift people out of poverty," Culver said. "But since 1975, it has been greatly expanded and is now a benefit to low-income and moderate-income people."

...

The Culver/Judge administration expanded Iowa's earned income tax credit in 2007, making the state tax credit available to more than 85,000 additional Iowans. In tax year 2007, about 202,100 Iowans claimed the state earned income tax credit and received $23.6 million in the form of lowered taxes and tax refunds.
