The Globe Gazette published an editorial yesterday, praising the bills that Governor Culver signed into law to help Iowa's veterans:
Now, the state of Iowa is helping veterans in key areas — finances and mental health.
Gov. Chet Culver signed two bills Tuesday to expand that help.
One allows benefits paid by the Veterans Trust Fund to be exempted from individual income taxes. The bill can be applied retroactively to Jan. 1.
The other bill will place a veteran knowledgeable about behavioral and mental health issues on two panels dealing with mental health policy.
These bills amount, in a sense, to putting more of our state’s money where our collective mouth is — backing up our countless expressions of pride with meaningful legislation.
We are indeed proud of our veterans for their sacrifices — time away, dangerous duty in some cases and, in too many cases, suffering injuries or worse.
Nothing can make up for those sacrifices totally. But Iowa is doing the right thing by making life for veterans better here.
